In February, carnivals are in the spotlight!
February rhymes with Valentine’s but also with carnivals!
This year, the season will be different, get ready to celebrate in a whole new way!
5 – Dunkirk
The origins of the carnival date back to the early 17th century. It was then a celebration organized in honor of sailors who set sail. On the first day of the carnival the mayor of the city and his municipal councilors threw smoked herrings at the carnival guests! We thought you should know, just in case.
Until your next visit in 2022, make sure you learn the 56 official songs of the event to be fully prepared. The songs are actually available on this YouTube video.
4 – Trinidad and Tobago
Without a doubt, the most spectacular carnival in the Caribbean. Attendees dance to the rhythm of large orchestras playing with drums and percussions made from recycled material! And to the rhythm of Calypso also!
Visit the carnival’s official YouTube channel to spice up your day!
3 – Nice
The King of carnivals is undoubtedly the Nice Carnival. Each year, a new King is presented. While this year’s theme (King of the animals) has been postponed to 2022, it is probably the easiest carnival to do at home.
Elect your own Animal King, have an animal-themed movie marathon, and replace the usual flower battle with an equally incredible pillow battle!
2 – New Orleans
When I think about carnivals, I automatically think about people partying and dancing in the French Quarter in New Orleans.
Although much of the festivities have been canceled for 2021, you can still attend virtually via their mobile application: Throw Me Something Bacchus!
Let the good times roll!
1 – Quebec
Let’s be proud of our province and our so loved Quebec Winter Carnival which is THE largest winter carnival in the world, since 1955!
This year’s theme is « Frette pas frette, j’y vais… ou j’me connecte ! » (which translates to «Cold or not, let’s go…or let’s connect»). From February 5 to 14, discover the virtual carnival on the official YouTube channel where you’ll find concerts, mixology workshops, interviews, quizzes and even family mornings. During this period, Quebec City turns into a magical city with over a hundred ice sculptures exhibited!
